![]() ![]() ![]() The score for this very British story is, oddly, written by a Frenchman, Alexandre Desplat, working with Frears for the first time. Frears’ all-star cast also includes James Cromwell as Prince Phillip, Alex Jennings as Prince Charles, Helen McCrory as Cherie Blair, and Sylvia Sims as the Queen Mother. This interesting modern history is the subject of director Stephen Frears’ new film The Queen, which looks at the events surrounding the death of Diana from the points of view of Queen Elizabeth II (played by Helen Mirren, in a role tipped for Academy Award consideration) and British Prime Minister Tony Blair (played by Michael Sheen). Queen Elizabeth II in particular came in for special criticism, initially for her refusal to allow the Royal Standard on top of Buckingham Palace to fly at half mast, and later for her seemingly forced and insincere broadcast to the nation several days later. Now, the Royal Family was cold and insular, out of touch with the thoughts and feelings of the nation they ruled, and totally irrelevant to modern British life. The Royal Family’s rigid adherence to protocol was interpreted by the public as a lack of compassion, and all of a sudden the tide turned against them. However, the reaction of the Royal Family to the death of Diana caused unprecedented resentment and outcry. But, beyond this, the House of Windsor was seen as a mighty figurehead, as people who represented the best interests of Britain at home and abroad, as a family to be looked up to and admired. Sure, they had their moments of scandal, Prince Phillip continually said stupid things to people on foreign tours, and there was a section of society which called for them to be abolished and the country turned into a republic. Up until that time, the British royal family were generally looked upon with fondness. But a dream that's still worth seeing. The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997, was something of a turning point in the modern history of the United Kingdom. In the end you're left with the impression of stepping out from a hazy rose petal fragile dream that from someones tumultuous life. This is a visually beautiful film but I think Sofia Coppola could've delved deeper into this rich personality. The relationship and the feelings she had for her husband aren't very clear and his for her aren't very much elucidated. Marie-Antoinette was a mother who cared about her children and was involved with them.though we hardly we see this in the film except the sequence of her and her daughter on the farm. ![]() This is a biography of Marie Antoinette.even though not a completely serious or historically accurate one.but if Sofia Coppola is trying to show this French queens personality and human side then I can assure you there was more to her than the frilly lace, the satin shoe, the bakery department and the champagne. But if that was her point the film should've ended long before. Sofia Coppola apparently tried to show a girl out of touch with reality who lives just to have fun.to escape the wagging tongues of Versailles. We see Marie Antoinette frolicking around in the grass too many times. The trying on of shoes, the hairdressing, the patisserie dishes and the champagne. The negative points of the film is that Sofia Coppola uses the same techniques, the same scenes through out the movie. We see Marie Antoinette at the beginning trying to fit in with the strict life at Versailles but further on it's clear that with the gossip following her she stops caring and starts to have fun her own way which leads to her ruin. She succeeds in showing Marie Antoinette as a naive girl in the beginning.who hugs her first lady, cries at parting with her dog and announcing that the morning ceremonials are ridiculous. Her suffering through gossip and humiliation by her husbands lack of 'interest' in her etc. The style is original and Sofia Coppola succeeds at showing Marie Antoinette's personal side. but those are not he bad points of this movie. This isn't a bad film but I think that it well get a lot of criticism for not being historically accurate, not serious enough, being too long, being 'unfinished'. But I must say that the trailers I had seen and the film have a completely different feeling. I was looking forward to seeing this movie.a lot. I have seen this film yesterday after a lot of hype up and waiting since in my little town everything comes out a month after the release date. ![]()
